Adventures in Academia
Jan. 24th, 2011 08:02 pmSo I was going to enrol in Foundations in Medical Ethics or whatever (it was to do with abortion and euthanasia and stuff like that) ... except:
The only problem is that I don't know what to do it on! I keep thinking about doing it on saviour siblings (except that the lovely
misfit already did it and I'd feel like I was ARGUING WITH HER!!!!), or the varying views of abortion in Australia or even just when legal personhood commences and what rights a foetus has in general.
Work was rather less than helpful on that regard: their recommendation was "DO SOMETHING RELATED TO HERE" and frankly I am just kind of "well I could, but isn't that what I'm here for, to learn about that? My masters class is for ~new things~".
SO NATURALLY, I LEAVE IT FOR MY FLIST TO DECIDE WHAT I AM DOING( CHOOSE MY LIFE FOR ME. )
- They didn't bother processing my paperwork to study cross-institutionally until the week after the deadline closed;
- The class isn't even being run because they poached the lecturer to come and work at my home institution.

I've heard that the situation here has made international headlines, so I'm just going to do a big massive infodump so that people are cool and know that I am as safe as I can be!
( More details! )
In summary: there is no risk to my personal safety! There is not a lot of risk of property damage. There is a lot of water around my street, and I am uncertain when I can go home again. I also don't have enough clean clothes, but that's okay because I got paid yesterday. I can buy some. I am very fortunate and very privileged right now; I have shelter, electricity, internet access, and food. Many Queenslanders do not have this.
If you want to donate money, please go here. Please, don't feel obligated to donate money. I know that money is tough at the moment! But given that there are scams operating at the moment, I know this fundraiser is legitimate and if you want to, that is the best place for it.
Otherwise! If you know people in New South Wales and Victoria, keep them in your thoughts too! The torrential rain we got is moving down their way and there is definitely talk of flash flooding there. (It might be novel to actually see water in the Murray Darling basin!) Stay safe, dudes and dudettes!
If you want to link other people to this, go ahead. idk how many people are concerned but sure, why not.

Sep. 26th, 2010 03:17 pmSo I have been experimenting with new and exciting things lately!
- Loose leaf tea is awesome, how have I not discovered this sooner? I have six blends already and I can easily see this taking over part of my shelves in the pantry very easily. But it is awesome. So that's okay.
- Also experimenting with hardcore cooking and fuck yeah, it's awesome. I've mastered haloumi and some lemon and honey glaze and chicken and mushroom pie. You may all be jealous.
- I finished an assignment! ...and then realised it's not due yet. I'm still handing it in. Organisation, what is this?
- slooooowly organising my room into something where I can find things.
- alas, my mint chocolate cupcakes were a disaster. A hilarious disaster though, so that's okay.

Aug. 29th, 2010 05:48 pmstealing this from
unicorn !
Give me a fandom, and I will give you:
◊ An OTP for that fandom
◊ A ship I dislike for that fandom
◊ My favorite character
◊ My take on said character, unpopular or otherwise (and why I like them)
◊ If relevant, my happy ending (AU or non) for that character
◊ A bit of headcanon about how I view their sexuality
◊ A character from another fandom I would love them to meet
◊ A runner up for favorite character

Aug. 21st, 2010 07:17 pmI had this post about how I start a new job this week coming and how my old team reacted when they heard I was transferring, but I can summarise it: people are dicks, I need a hug. Or to knee people in the groin. Or both!
Here's to hoping that the new team is better. They have already given me a desk, which is more than the other team ever did.

Jun. 26th, 2010 06:27 pmWow, this week has been a busy, exhausting week. Or, rather, the last half of the week.
We had a court case on Thursday morning in the High Court - that is, the highest court in Australia - and it wasn't a full hearing. Basically to go to the High Court you need to apply to the court, and they decide after hearing a presentation whether your case has merit to go further. So we were preparing for our appearance for that application process on the Thursday. Except. Oh my God, the disasters that took place. We got it all sorted out in the end, thankfully, but I needed a hug afterward.
Then I go to court, come out and learn that we have a new PM! Awesome?!
On Friday I found out that I haven't been paid the right amount since ... well, ever, and so will be getting one nasty backpay at some point.
And I have a massive sleep debt still. Turns out I had whooping cough and that was why I was coughing, and the reason why I was so tired was that I was moderately anaemic! Whoops.

Jun. 6th, 2010 09:20 pmPapers written: 3
Paper outstanding: 1
Awesome quotient: High.
I'm also contemplating whether to buy a paid account with dreamwidth. I've practically migrated over here, the site seems stable enough and all, but ... what would I do with 100 icons. Serious concerns. This is clearly the time where people tell me where the icon communities are at.
Also I started dabbling in the Ar Tonelico fandom and I. I. what? It's not as batshit as the Tales of fandom but it has the same earnest quality as the YW one and about the same understanding of the literary tropes going on.
Also started replaying a Particular Game that is my special love and ahhhh I want to talk about how awesome it is, but I just know I'm going to end up apping from it! And I want to be sneaky!!!

Jun. 2nd, 2010 10:41 pmSo apparently I can get 81% for participation in a class when all I do is talk to
nerdrage and pretend to be magical people on the internet. I am glad to see that postgraduate education is value for money!
In honour of my ability to somehow pull this off, joining the meme bandwagon.
Name a fandom and I'll give you some unpopular opinions about it.
I might even answer this one. How novel.

May. 18th, 2010 10:39 pmre-voc-at-ing (verb); the act of revocation.
eg: The Security Council, by revocating Somalia's territorial sovereignty, even temporarily and under certain conditions, has made the status of Somali pirates under international law difficult to define.
I AM TOTALLY LITERATE YOU GUYS. Seriously though, how did I graduate from law school again?
(Answer: blowjobs and bribery, most likely)

Apr. 30th, 2010 10:29 pmI'm trying to tell myself that being 2,300/3500 for my paper on foreign policy in relation to Somalian piracy is some progress. It looks like I'll be on track, at least, for the word limit. Whether it's of a sufficient standard for post-grad, however, I'm not sure. It's one of those situations where you think you're not smart enough to pull off the topic, but you have to try regardless because you're now in debt to the government for just under three thousand dollars. It's strange, because I often wonder why I'm doing this; I was hardly the outstanding academic of my class. I'm pretty sure my honours supervisor despaired of my ever getting a paper up to standard. And yet, here I am. Strange, huh.
Assuming I finish that by Sunday lunchtime, I have to go down to the library and borrow out a book to start my next assignment, due at the end of the month. It's going to be so good on the 15th of June though, when I hand in my last assessment piece. But whether I survive until then is another story! Oh anxiety attacks, I have not missed you. Really. You were here last week go away. :|
And, adding to the hilarious stress that will be my life, I rang up work's HR department and asked if they had any positions coming up that I could apply for, as I've been told by my current supervisor that he really does expect me to move on after I get admitted. It turns out that there is one ... only it's for an admitted or close-to-be-admitted lawyer. To be fair, I'm working towards being admitted in July, but it's a little sooner than I expected! I'm not expecting to get the job, but I might as well apply anyway, just to get my name out there to lawyers so that they know that I exist, am looking for a lawyer's job and have been working as a researcher for a year now!
Thoughts on new video games that I am playing and BPAL stuff tomorrow, which will at least be a far more interesting read.

Apr. 17th, 2010 06:46 pmTHINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND
YEAH.
I need to find some kind of incentive or something. Something that isn't sleeping, though I am totally awesome at that today.
- finish researching paper on piracy in Somalia, work out thesis topic, start drafting argument.
- do practice problem for sea carriage law.
- Begin readings on bills of lading for sea carriage.
- do readings for international dispute settlement.
- clean my room.
- finish my replay of Mana Khemia so that I can start Tales of Eternia.
- find and reread my copy of A Wizard of Mars.
- Post for characters.
YEAH.

Apr. 5th, 2010 07:54 amIt was my father's 50th birthday the other day, and so my mother bought him a wii, a truly astonishing amount of peripheries and various games to celebrate being free of kids. We went to visit on Friday (my younger sister and I) and while my dad has Mario Kart and all that ... their favourite game?
The House of the Dead: Overkill.
I do not even know. Anyone have any recommendations for other games to get on the wii? My mother especially likes FPS.

Mar. 13th, 2010 09:44 pmFor those dirty heathens who don't live in Brisbane, we have this tunnel called the Clem 7 tunnel that bypasses the city proper in connecting the north and south. It was put together by Campbell Newman, a clearly hyperactive and charismatic town planner who is probably the best mayor the city of Brisbane has had since the Clem Jones that the tunnel was named for (who made sure Brisbane was all connected to sewerage back in the day), so this is saying something. Pretty much all of his suggestions have worked out amazingly well, and I am super excited to see how his Go Between Bridge is going to free up this terribly congested patch of road between the city and the uni.
Tragically, the Clem 7 Tunnel has managed to garner a few unfortunate nicknames along the way. The most common one is the vagina tunnel, because of its orientation in comparison to the road, the temperature and humidity inside (Brisbane is pretty humid and it's dark), and that it's been said that the new life of the city will come from the tunnel. Brizvegans are classy, yo. The other tragedy is that the tunnel has been plagued with difficulties that have caused it to be evacuated a few times. No-one knows why.
Brisbane, your vagina is haunted.
It's the only explanation.
Please tell me that more than one other person on my flist will get this reference.

Feb. 10th, 2010 08:27 pmI am bizarrely pleased with this icon.
In news that is not about my experiments with photoshop and webcomics, I'm moving out this Saturday. It is vaguely scary because the last time I moved out, my flatmate was a gigantic bitch. Hopefully this time it will be much better, or at least I will have more money to use. Also if this time doesn't work out, I'm not a student so that should expedite the whole process immensely.
I am also tragically, tragically addicted to BPAL. Geez, this is terrible. I refuse to buy any more at the moment because I already have over twenty how did this even happen. On the upside, I now have things to swap if and when I eventually ... get around to doing that. ONE DAY I WILL START A SWAP THINGY. I just have to work out whether I will post my reviews on scents here or ... create another journal. I will probably post it here because I will one day buy this thing paid time, and then when I do that I don't want to do that twice.
I also feel like the only one not cutting down journal icons.

Feb. 5th, 2010 09:36 pmSo I randomly applied to study post-grad part time while working. Fair enough. I got my package in the mail today and ... I'm sorry, I just couldn't take this section seriously:
" Students will be required to answer a practical problem question which will be released on Thursday 10 June 2010 and must be submitted on Tuesday 15 June 2010. Students are advised to write no more than 4,500 words (including footnotes). Answers which exceeed this length may be considered unduly prolix."
Okay. Prolix is basically when you make it tediously over-long. How would one make an assignment duly overly long, tedious and terribly written?
Or, you know, the lecturer doesn't understand what the word means.
I HAVE SUCH FAITH IN MY ACADEMIC ADVISORS.
